School of Visual Arts is a proprietary institution that was founded in 1947. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 3,678. It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar.

The School of Visual Arts, located in New York City (primarily located in a pair of skyscrapers in Manhattan – one near Midtown and the other in Chelsea), is one of the largest independent regionally accredited colleges of art in the United States. One aspect that distinguishes SVA from other colleges is the size and professional standing of its faculty.

The School of Visual Arts in New York is one of the top art schools in the United States, not just in film production and cinematography, but photography, sculpture, interior design, digital art and animation, The school has its own animation studio, as well as three of the most prestigious gallery spaces in New York.
